A special Rolex made for Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands has been auctioned.

The Prince, who was the grandfather of King Willem-Alexander, had a special Rolex that was auctioned on 9 December for €140,000.

The Hague-based auction house Venduehuis Den Haag reported the sale that pulled in much more money than anticipated. The guide price for the watch was between €10,000 and €20,000.

The 18-carat gold Rolex was specifically designed for the consort of Queen Juliana and father to Queen (now Princess) Beatrix. It had the Prince’s signature engraved on the back, and “being an avid hunter seeking out new territory around the globe, it was made to cater for any kind of climate.”

The original box and papers were included, as was a small paper signed by Prince Bernhard.

He is said to have worn it several times before giving it away.

The German-born Prince died in 2004.
