The Spanish Royal Family is in mourning after the death of Fernando Gómez-Acebo, the first cousin of King Felipe and nephew to King Juan Carlos.

Fernando Gómez-Acebo, 49, died after battling poor health for quite some time. He was hospitalised on Monday, 26 February but died on Friday evening.

He fought chronic respiratory failure for many years, which was only made worse by contracting COVID and the flu in the past few years.

His funeral will take place on Saturday, 2 March, in Madrid’s Tres Cantos funeral home, according to Spanish media.

Fernando was the youngest child of Infanta Pilar and her husband, Luis, born on 30 September 1974.

He was close to his uncle, King Juan Carlos and cousins, King Felipe, Infanta Cristina and Infanta Elena, with the family sharing several summers in Palma de Mallorca.

The son of the Duke and Duchess of Badajoz preferred to stay out of the limelight and lived a normal life, working for Philips Ibérica SAE and serving on the Board of Directors for the Plus Ultra insurance company.

Fernando was married twice, having one son, Nicolás, who is now eight years old.
