Queen Mary of Denmark has thrown her support behind the Danish men’s handball team.

The Queen travelled to Cologne, Germany, to cheer on the Danes during the European Championship final match against France.

Mary was decked out in the Danish colours of red and white to root on the Danes and even awarded them their silver medal after the defeat by the French. France defeated Denmark 33-31 in extra time.

The Queen later wrote on Instagram to congratulate the team and share a photo taken before the second half began: “It was a very close game. The picture here was taken just before the second half started. What a final ……..

“Well fought Denmark. It was close and nerve-wracking to watch. It has been an impressive effort put in by all of you at the European Championship.

“Congratulations on the silver medal🥈 which I had the honour to present.”

Queen Mary travelled to Germany solo as her husband, King Frederik, was preparing to undertake a business trip to Poland from 31 January to 2 February.
