A possible visit by Pope Leo to the Principality of Monaco is under consideration.

Last week, the Holy See Press Office confirmed to journalists that His Holiness Pope Leo XIV may visit Monaco at the end of March. The announcement comes as speculation was mounting following Prince Albert’s visit to the Vatican in January, which included an invitation to visit Monaco.

In response to several news agencies’ questions, the Holy See Press Office noted that, if confirmed, the visit would last one day at the end of March.

The historic visit would be the first in modern history by a reigning Supreme Pontiff to the Principality of Monaco. The visit would also be the American-born Pontiff’s second Apostolic Journey following Türkiye and Lebanon late last year.

Though sources in the Palais Princier de Monaco [Prince’s Palace] remain cautious, and, when asked, told Riviera Radio, “It could be late March, or April, or June.”

The visit would hold significant historical value as the Principality’s state religion is Catholicism. Princess Charlene is also one of the very few women who is afforded the exclusive Privilège du Blanc.

The privilège du blanc allows Consorts of Catholic monarchies to wear white as opposed to the traditional black when meeting the Supreme Pontiff of the Holy See. The only women globally allowed the privilège are Queen Sofia of Spain, Queen Paola of the Belgians, Grand Duchess Stéphanie of Luxembourg, Grand Duchess Maria Teresa, Queen Mathilde of the Belgians, Queen Letizia of Spain, as well as Marina, Princess of Naples.

There are several Papal visits rumoured to various parts of the world later this year, including a possible summer visit to Spain. There has yet to be any confirmation of any of the aforementioned visits.

The Holy See Press Office did confirm that Pope Leo will not be visiting his native United States of America in 2026.

The Royal News Organisation will keep you up to date with all future announcements regarding the possible historic visit to Monaco.
