King Frederik and Queen Mary of Denmark have sent a letter of condolence to King Haakon VIII.
The letter says, “It is with great sadness that we have received the news of the death of your father, His Majesty King Harald. Our warmest thoughts go to Aunt Sonja, to you and Mette-Marit, and to the rest of your family.
Your father had a great influence on my mother and on us. Uncle Harald, with his warm personality and rock-solid calm, could make anyone relax in his company. He was a fine man with a twinkle in his eye and a big heart.
For 35 years, King Harald was a solid rallying point for the Norwegian people. He combined duty and responsibility with presence and humanity. He was well-liked by few and will be missed by many.
The Danish-Norwegian ties are strong. For generations, our families and countries have been closely connected. Your father stands as a beautiful image of everything that helps to bind us together.
You now step into your role as king. It is a responsibility that we are confident you will bear with the same honour and dignity as your father.
May faith, hope and love follow you and give you strength on your path.”
The Danish King and Queen have also ordered that flags will be flown at half-mast from Amalienborg today.
