King Felipe of Spain has presented the trophy for the 43rd Copa del Rey de Vela at the Royal Palace of La Almudaina in Palma.
The King presented the award at a ceremony hosted by journalist Cristina Roig and the Vice President of the Real Club Náutico de Palma, Alejandro López.
The winners were “Estrella Damm Sailing Team in the Sail Racing ORC A; Nunoto Cafiver in the Uber ORC C; Balearia in the Balearia Women’s Cup; David Team’s American Vesper in the Abanca ORC 0; and Mati Sepp’s Estonian Technonicol in the Ubico ORC B class,” according to Casa Real.
Not only did His Majesty get the honour of handing out the trophy to the winners, but he was also a participant. King Felipe competed aboard AIFOS and placed sixth. His boat represented the Spanish Navy in the ABANCA ORC 0 category. This category had 35 boats in the Ubico ORC B class.
It wasn’t all smooth sailing for the Spanish monarch. He escaped a serious injury on 31 July when a heavy sail and boom fell inches from his head. The avid sailor was reportedly unfazed. He was later seen with a bandage on his leg, but it is not known how the King sustained that injury.
There were 130 teams from 24 countries that participated.
The 43rd Copa del Rey de Vela took place between 23 July and 2 August in the Bay of Palma.
Felipe’s father, King Juan Carlos, established the tradition of competing in the race.
