Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway will soon be in need of a lung transplant, the royal court has announced.

The Crown Princess was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis in 2018, which causes scarring in the lungs. Recent tests have shown that the Crown Princess’s lungs are deteriorating. Doctors at the Rikshospitalet have now begun preparations to assess her for a lung transplant.

Are Martin Holm, head of department and professor at the Pulmonary Department at Rikshospitalet, said, “We are approaching the time when a lung transplant must be performed, and we are making the necessary preparations so that it will be possible when that time comes. It has not yet been decided when the Crown Princess will be placed on the waiting list for a lung transplant.”

Until then, the Crown Princess’s engagements will be adapted so that her health condition and official role can be combined as best as possible.
