King Frederik of Denmark received the first commemorative coin marking the abdication of his mother, Queen Margrethe, and his subsequent accession to the throne.

His Majesty received the gold coin from the Director of the National Bank, Christian Kettel Thomse, at Frederik VIII’s Palace at Amalienborg.

One side of the 20 Danish kroner coin features a portrait of the King while the other side portrays his mother.

One million copies of the coin have been created and they will go on sale in November.

It is normal in Denmark for special coins to be released for such royal occasions, and the tradition dates back 1,000 years. A commemorative coin was also issued in 1972 when Queen Margrethe ascended to the throne after the death of her father, King Frederik IX.

The National Bank also revealed that coins with King Frederik’s face will go into circulation in the second half of 2025.

Frederik ascended to the throne on 14 January 2024 after Queen Margrethe announced her intent to abdicate on New Year’s Eve.
