The United States doesn’t have a royal family as it chose to be a republic after breaking free from Great Britain in the 1700s. However, that doesn’t mean there aren’t American citizens in line to the British throne.
Two American citizens are rather high up in the line of succession. Both children of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex hold dual American-British citizenship and rank in the top ten in the British line of succession.
Prince Archie is in sixth place while Princess Lilibet is in seventh place.
As such, Prince Archie is the closest American citizen in line to be the British monarch.
Archie Harrison was born on 6 May 2019 in London to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex while his great-grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, was on the throne.
At the time of his birth, he held no title as titles are limited to the male line grandchildren of the monarch and the grandchildren of the first son of the Prince of Wales. When Queen Elizabeth II died in 2022, her son, Charles, succeeded her as King Charles III. From that point, Archie became Prince Archie of Sussex (and his sister became Princess Lilibet).
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped back as working members of the Royal Family in early 2020. He now lives in his mother’s home state of California where he and his sister are getting a more traditional American upbringing.
