Princess Anne was the guest of honour at the Mary Peters Trust gala fundraiser in Belfast on Friday.

The actor Jimmy Nesbitt organised the event. The event was in honour of the conclusion of the anniversary celebration of Lady Mary Peters’ iconic gold medal win in 1972.

The Princess is patron of the Mary Peters Trust, which was founded by Mary to support young athletes from Northern Ireland.

Lady Mary said: “I am immensely grateful to HRH The Princess Royal for coming to Belfast to attend our dinner. It was a wonderful evening and a fitting end to a special year. This month marks 50 years since Princess Anne presented me with the BBC Sports Personality of the Year trophy. It is a very special memory that I cherish.
