The British government is considering removing Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor from the line of succession.
The government is said to be considering introducing legislation that would remove the former prince from the line of succession to succeed King Charles.
The BBC was told by Defence Minister Luke Pollard that this was “the right thing to do,” as this would prevent Andrew from ever possibly ascending the throne.
Andrew’s titles of Prince and Duke of York were removed in October 2025 after continued controversy regarding his friendship with convicted American paedophile Jeffrey Epstein. However, at present, he remains eighth in line to the throne behind Prince William and his children and Prince Harry and his children.
He was arrested on 19 February, his 66th birthday, on suspicion of misconduct in public office. He was held for 11 hours before being released.
Andrew has continuously denied any wrongdoing and has never been convicted of any crime.
The current line of succession is:
- The Prince of Wales
- Prince George
- Princess Charlotte
- Prince Louis
- The Duke of Sussex
- Prince Archie
- Princess Lilibet
- Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor
- Princess Beatrice
- Sienna Mapelli Mozzi
- Athena Mapelli Mozzi
- Princess Eugenie
- August Brooksbank
- Ernest Brooksbank
- The Duke of Edinburgh
- Earl of Wessex
- Lady Louise Mountbatten-Windsor
- The Princess Royal
- Peter Phillips
- Savannah Phillips
- Isla Phillips
- Zara Tindall
- Mia Tindall
- Lena Tindall
- Lucas Tindall
The above only shows the descendants of Queen Elizabeth II. The full British line of succession has thousands of people.
