The King and Queen of Bhutan have received honorary degrees from Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok.

King Jigme Khesar and Queen Jetsun Pema were awarded honorary doctoral degrees from the Bangkok university on 22 December.

Their Majesties were in the Thai capital to receive the honours. The King was awarded the Doctor of Philosophy in International Development Studies for his “visionary leadership in advancing peace, inclusive development, good governance, youth empowerment, and innovative national initiatives, as well as in strengthening international engagement and Bhutan–Thailand relations.”

The Royal Office for Media said the Queen was given the Doctor of Philosophy in Sociology and Anthropology to recognise her “distinguished service in promoting social well-being, environmental conservation, public health and mental well-being, inclusion of persons with disabilities, and grassroots economic development.”

While in Thailand for the ceremony, the King and Queen also visited King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital after participating in academic and cultural programmes.
