The Belgian line of succession

The Belgian line of succession currently has 18 people able to inherit the throne – all of whom are descendants of King Albert II. Belgium practices absolute primogeniture, meaning that the firstborn inherits the throne, no matter their gender.

Below is the current line of succession to succeed King Philippe:

  1. Princess Elisabeth, the Duchess of Brabant
  2. Prince Gabriel
  3. Prince Emmanuel
  4. Princess Eléonore
  5. Princess Astrid
  6. Prince Amedeo
  7. Archduchess Anna Astrid
  8. Archduke Maximilian
  9. Archduchess Alix
  10. Princess Maria Laura
  11. Albert Isvy
  12. Prince Joachim
  13. Princess Luisa Maria
  14. Princess Laetitia Maria
  15. Prince Laurent
  16. Princess Louise
  17. Prince Nicolas
  18. Prince Aymeric

Princess Delphine and her two children, Princess Joséphine and Prince Oscar, are not in the line of succession. Delphine is King Albert II’s daughter from an extramarital affair. She took him to court to be formally recognised as his daughter. After a DNA test proved the King was her father, the Belgian Court of Appeals granted her and her children princely titles. However, due to the circumstances of birth, she and her heirs were not granted succession rights or a royal endowment.
