Crown Prince Fumihito of Japan and his family have been interviewed by child reporters in Tokyo.

The Crown Prince and his children, Princess Kako and Prince Hisahito, spoke to elementary and junior high school students from Okinawa Prefecture at the East Residence for 30 minutes.

This was the first year that Princess Kako took part in the event and the second time for Prince Hisahito.

Crown Prince Fumihito told the reporters at the beginning of the interview, “I hope you will use this opportunity to broaden your knowledge and experience.”

The initiative allows students to practise their technique for interviewing and gives them invaluable experience.

The heir to the throne was following in the footsteps of his father, Emperor Emeritus Akihito, who was the first member of the Imperial Family to give an interview to young reporters while he was the Crown Prince of Japan.

Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako have also taken part in the traditional interview.

Prince Hisahito took part in the tradition a month before his official Coming of Age Ceremonies take place on 6 September.
