Crown Prince Fumihito of Japan has spoken about the revision of the Imperial House Law during a press conference held ahead of his official visit to Paraguay.
He was asked, “What are your thoughts on the revised Imperial House Law, and how would you like Princess Kako and Prince Hisahito to progress in their lives?”
“I understand that it was enacted after discussions in the Diet. Recently, the Imperial House Law has been reported in the media, and I myself have had many thoughts on the matter. I agree with what His Majesty the Emperor said the other day. However, I would like to refrain from saying anything more about that matter as it concerns the system. As for my daughters and sons, I hope they will cherish each and every job and fulfil their duties. As parents, we wish for them to live happy lives.”
He was asked, “What is the role of female members of the imperial family?”
“The role of the Imperial family is to fulfil their duties in response to societal demands, if those demands are good. I believe there is no distinction between men and women in this regard.”
He was asked, “What is the most important role of the Imperial Family?”
“I think it’s important that the feelings of the Imperial Family are widely communicated to the public. Are there any ideas or concerns you have about how to improve the way they express their intentions? I’m a human being, after all, so of course I have a lot of thoughts and feelings. I think it would be strange if I didn’t. But how can I express those thoughts? How can I communicate them? And what if they involve the law? That whole situation is very difficult.”
“It’s important for society to progress, so I think it’s important for various people to constantly think about what the ideal situation should be.”
