King Harald V of Norway has died at the age of 89.
The King passed away earlier today in the National Hospital in Oslo, after being admitted last week.
The Royal Court announced on Sunday, 23 August, that the King’s health had deteriorated and that he was receiving antibiotics for treatment of a blood infection. At the time, his condition was stable. On 27 August, the Royal Court announced that his condition had become “very serious.”
They announced today, “It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of His Majesty King Harald today. King Harald passed away peacefully at the National Hospital on Friday, August 28, at 6:35 a.m.”
The King and Queen Sonja had been on a private holiday in Spain, and their son, Haakon, was serving as Regent.
Harald’s son, Haakon, is now King of Norway.
King Harald ascended to the throne upon the death of his father, King Olav, in January 1991.
The late monarch had been married to Queen Sonja for over 50 years.
