Norway has a new Crown Princess after the death of King Harald.
Former Crown Prince Haakon has succeeded his father to the Norwegian throne and is now King Haakon VIII. Haakon’s daughter, Ingrid Alexandra, is now first in line to the throne and holds the title of Crown Princess Ingrid Alexandra of Norway.
Ingrid Alexandra is the elder child and only daughter of King Haakon and Queen Mette-Marit. She has a younger brother, Prince Sverre Magnus, and an older half-brother, Marius Borg Høiby.
The Crown Princess was born on 21 January 2004 in Oslo’s National Hospital and has many fellow heirs to thrones as her godparents. She was christened in the Royal Chapel of the Royal Palace of Oslo on 17 April 2004. Her godparents are Princess Märtha Louise, her paternal aunt; Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark, a paternal cousin; Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden, a paternal cousin; King Felipe of Spain, and Marit Tjessem, her maternal grandmother. The late King Harald served double duty as a beloved grandfather and godfather.
Ingrid Alexandra, affectionately known as Ingrid by her family, attended a local state school for elementary school as her parents wanted her to have as normal a childhood as possible. She later transferred to the private English-language Oslo International School in the autumn of 2014. She completed her lower secondary education at Uranienborg School in Oslo before graduating from Elvebakken Upper Secondary School in 2023.

The future queen is an avid surfer and has competed in the Norwegian surfing championship for juniors. In 2020, she won the gold medal at the competition. Ingrid Alexandra is also said to enjoy skiing and kickboxing.
Her Royal Highness came of age in January 2022, and large celebrations were held for her 18th birthday in June after a delay due to global health regulations. Foreign royals from across Europe flew in to celebrate the occasion, including Princesses Elisabeth of Belgium and Amalia of the Netherlands. Both young ladies are sure to be guides for Ingrid Alexandra, as they are or have been teenage heirs to the throne themselves not too long ago.

The Crown Princess has another source of inspiration in neighbouring Sweden with her godmother, Crown Princess Victoria, with whom she is known to be very close. Victoria had a young Ingrid Alexandra serve as a bridesmaid in her 2010 wedding, and their families holiday together often. Victoria has been heir to the throne since 1980 when a change in the laws of succession named her the Crown Princess. She has decades of experience and advice that she is sure to pass on to Ingrid Alexandra.
The Princess worked as a school assistant and environmental worker in the autumn of 2023 at Uranienborg School. Beginning in January 2024, Ingrid Alexandra began training at Skjold camp in Indre Troms. The Royal Court said she would be a service worker after training and complete “a professional period with more specific education followed by a departmental period of training and practice.”

Ingrid Alexandra enrolled at the University of Sydney in Australia, majoring in international relations and politics. The Crown Princess is currently studying as an exchange student at the University of Oslo, following her mother’s lung transplant in the summer of 2026.
Things are changing for the new Crown Princess Ingrid Alexandra, and Norway and the world will be watching to see how she grows into her role as heir and how she chooses to make a difference.
