The Duke of Edinburgh has visited Mount Vernon during his five-day tour of the United States.
The Duke’s visit began on 28 September and focused on the shared interests around youth empowerment and opportunity, and the arts.
During the last day of the visit, the Duke visited Mount Vernon in recognition of the Year of America 250 celebrations.
“It allows us to step up and back from the day-to-day and remember that we are really, we’re still family. We’re reminding ourselves that it’s bigger than all of us.”, Sir Christian Turner, the British ambassador to the U.S., told USA TODAY after the visit.
Prince Edward toured the home of the former president and laid a wreath on his grave.
He toured their new education centre, where the CEO of Mount Vernon, Doug Bradburn, showed the Duke George Washington’s Book of Common Prayer. Washington had crossed out the prayer for King George III and Queen Charlotte. “Sorry to show you this”, Doug Bradburn told the Duke.
The Duke then visited a recreated Continental Army encampment, where he spoke with some of the reenactors.
Back inside, the Duke took a sip of Mount Vernon’s limited-edition bourbon and joked, “Your tongue goes numb.”
