The Prince and Princess of Wales met survivors of the Holocaust in London on Holocaust Memorial Day.

The Princess of Wales’s attendance was a surprise as only Prince William’s attendance had been revealed beforehand.

The Prince and Princess attended the lunch and ceremony at Guildhall alongside the Prime Minister, survivors and faith and civic leaders.

Their Royal Highnesses first met with survivors to hear their personal stories before attending the ceremony in memory of the millions of victims. Catherine was seen hugging survivors and was heard remarking: “It’s good to be able to be here.”

Prince William also spoke during the ceremony, remarking: “I am honoured to join you today to mark Holocaust Memorial Day and to remember the millions murdered during the Holocaust and in subsequent genocides.

“We also remember those survivors who have lived with scars, both mental and physical.

“Their bravery, in sharing with us the most harrowing moments of their lives, is extremely powerful and ensures that we never forget. I assure them we never will.”

He and the Princess then lit a candle alongside young representatives from the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust with the candles serving “as a symbol to remember all those who lost their lives in the Holocaust and other genocides,” according to Kensington Palace.

This year marks 80 years since Auschwitz was liberated on 27 January 1945 by Soviet forces; 27 January is marked annually as Holocaust Memorial Day.
