Queen Mathilde of Belgium has paid tribute to the sole Belgian killed on 9/11 during a visit to the National September 11 Memorial ahead of her week at the UN General Assembly.
Queen Mathilde of the Belgians has arrived in New York City to attend the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) as Advocate for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. As the Queen arrived this weekend, Her Majesty made a meaningful visit to the 9/11 Memorial.
Queen Mathilde visited the National September 11 Memorial on Sunday evening, where Her Majesty placed a flower at the name of Mr Patrice Braut, who was the only Belgian victim of the 9/11 attacks.
Mr Braut was 31 years old at the time and working on the 97th floor of the World Trade Center’s North Tower — the first building to be struck. His remains were later identified in 2014, the 1,639th victim to be positively identified. Inscribed on the 9/11 Memorial are the names of the 2,983 victims of the 1993 and 2001 attacks.
It is customary to place a flower in memory of someone you knew when visiting. Every morning, the 9/11 Memorial and Museum also recognises the men, women, and children whose names are inscribed by placing a single white rose in each person’s name on their birthday. The Queen then placed a wreath in remembrance while at the site.
Queen Mathilde also attended a dinner with UNDP Administrator Belgian Alexander De Croo on Sunday evening.
