Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako visited the National Museum of Western Art in Tokyo on Thursday to view engravings by the famous Dutch artist Rembrandt.
On Thursday evening, Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako viewed an exhibition of prints by the famous Dutch artist Rembrandt at Tokyo’s National Museum of Western Art.
The Emperor and Empress were briefed on how various copperplate engravings, created using etching techniques, were printed on Japanese paper. Emperor Naruhito was particularly impressed by the lines and shading that are characteristic of Rembrandt’s work, saying, “The expression is wonderful.” Empress Masako also spoke about creating prints using etching in an art class during junior high school.
Emperor Naruhito recently viewed Rembrandt’s The Night Watch during the Japanese state visit to the Netherlands at Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum this past June.
