King Felipe, Queen Letizia and Pope Leo mark centenary of Antoni Gaudí’s death

King Felipe, Queen Letizia and Pope Leo have marked the centenary of Antoni Gaudí’s death during a Solemn Mass in the Basilica of La Sagrada Familia.

After greeting the dignitaries present, King Felipe and Queen Letizia received Pope Leo XIV in front of the main facade of the Passion Gate at the Sagrada Familia. He then greeted the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez; the President of the Congress of Deputies, Francina Armengol; the President of the Generalitat of Catalonia, Salvador Illa; the Mayor of Barcelona, ​​Jaume Collboni; and the President Delegate of the Construction Board of the Sagrada Familia, Esteve Camps.

In the courtyard of the Edicule, the usual workplace of Antoni Gaudí, the King, Queen, and Pope Leo received a briefing on the tactile model of the Tower of Jesus from Valentina Sánchez Cedres, a blind girl of thirteen. In the inner courtyard, Pope Leo greeted the Head of Government of Andorra, Xavier Espot; the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides; and the President of the Republic of Lithuania, Gitanas Nauséda.

From there, King Felipe, Queen Letizia and Pope Leo went into the central nave for the solemn mass to mark the centenary of the death of the famous architect and designer. Among his works is the Basilica of La Sagrada Familia. Pope Leo officiated the Solemn Mass and also blessed the Tower of Jesus. Over 5,000 people also participated in the Solemn Mass.

After this, a light and videomapping show also marked the occasion.
