King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima of the Netherlands have welcomed the President of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, and his wife, Elke Büdenbender.

According to the website of the Royal House, the state visit “is a confirmation of the intensive and multifaceted relations between both countries, on political, economic, and cultural-historical levels. As a neighbour, Germany is the most important trading partner of the Netherlands, and an ally in the European Union, the United Nations, and NATO.”

The President and his wife were officially welcomed to the Netherlands at Dam Square in Amsterdam. The national anthems of both countries were played, followed by an inspection of the Guard of Honour. A wreath was placed at the National Monument.

In the afternoon, they visited the National Holocaust Museum, where they received a guided tour. Minister Sterk for Long-Term Care, Youth and Sport and Mayor Halsema of Amsterdam also joined.

In the evening, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima hosted a state banquet at the Royal Palace in Amsterdam. The Princess of Orange and Prince Constantijn also attended the state banquet. Both the King and the President delivered speeches.
