At the time of his birth, he was simply known as The Gyalsey, which means Prince. In honour of his birth, 108,000 trees were planted in Bhutan. Before his birth, his uncle, Prince Jigyel Ugyen, was the heir presumptive to the throne.

The young Prince will eventually become the sixth Druk Gyalpo (Dragon King) of Bhutan. He now has a younger brother, Prince Jigme Ugyen (born 2020) and a younger sister, Princess Sonam (born 2023), who are second and third in the line of succession.
