Royals and celebrating Thanksgiving

Today marks American Thanksgiving, and with Americans in several royal families, some may be marking the holiday of their home country.

While some American royals live abroad, others have returned home and may celebrate Thanksgiving in the United States.

The most obvious royals who are almost certain to celebrate this year are the Sussex family. The Duke and Duchess live in Meghan’s home state of California with their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. The Duchess of Sussex has shared her love of cooking Thanksgiving dishes and her fondness for the holiday. Her children even help harvest the herbs used in their cooking. It is thought the family will mark Thanksgiving privately with the Duchess’s mother, Doria Ragland.

The head of the Greek Royal Family, Crown Prince Pavlos, resides in New York City. His wife, Crown Princess Marie-Chantal, was born with dual American and British citizenship; however, she renounced her American citizenship. Four of the couple’s five children were born in the United States and have American citizenship. The family is known to celebrate Thanksgiving each November, and the Crown Princess has shared information on her blog about how her family marks the day.

Sweden’s Princess Madeleine is married to an American-British man, Chris O’Neill, and the couple lived in the United States for many years with their three children (Princess Leonore, Prince Nicolas and Princess Adrienne). Princess Madeleine shared images of her family on her social media accounts throughout the years, showing them celebrating Thanksgiving. The family now resides in Stockholm, so it’s unknown if they still mark the holiday.

The Princely Family of Monaco may also celebrate the holiday, as Prince Albert and his siblings were born as American citizens to Prince Rainier and Princess Grace (the former an American). Princess Grace introduced the holiday to her children, and Albert chose to continue that tradition with his own children, Hereditary Prince Jacques, Princess Gabriella, Alexandre Grimaldi-Coste and Jazmine Grace Grimaldi (the latter who has American citizenship). Due to his role as a future head of state, Albert renounced his American citizenship upon becoming an adult.

The Royal News Organisation wishes all those celebrating Thanksgiving today a wonderful holiday!
