Queen Sofía was honoured by her son, King Felipe of Spain, with the Order of the Golden Fleece at the Royal Palace of Madrid.

The King bestowed the Collar of the Illustrious Order of the Golden Fleece on his mother for her “dedication and commitment to the service of Spain and the Crown.”

King Felipe issued a Royal Decree granting his mother the Catholic order of chivalry.

Queen Letizia was on hand, alongside Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofía, for the touching moment. Members of the government, including President Pedro Sanchez, also witnessed the ceremony.

Aside from the King’s mother, Felipe González, Miguel Herrero y Rodríguez de Miñón, and Miquel Roca i Junyent were also honoured.

After the honours had been handed out, the Royal Guard’s Music Unit played the National Anthem.

The Illustrious Order of the Golden Fleece was created in 1429 by Philip III the Good, Duke of Burgundy, to celebrate his union with Isabella of Portugal.
