Grand Duke and Duchess head to Belgium

Grand Duke Guillaume and Grand Duchess Stéphanie of Luxembourg undertook their first official foreign visit since the Grand Duke ascended the throne.

Their Royal Highnesses were welcomed to Belgium by King Philippe and Queen Mathilde at the Palace Square in Brussels for the playing of both national anthems.

Both women struggled to hang on to their hats in the windy conditions.

They then travelled to the Royal Palace to sign the guestbook for the official visit.

Not only are Belgium and Luxembourg neighbouring countries, but the royal families are also closely related. King Philippe and Grand Duke Guillaume are first cousins once removed. They share Princess Joséphine-Charlotte of Belgium, who was later Grand Duchess of Luxembourg, as an ancestor. The Grand Duchess was the aunt of King Philippe and the grandmother of Grand Duke Guillaume.

King Philippe invited his cousin to Belgium for his first foreign trip as monarch.

Grand Duke Guillaume was sworn in as the new Grand Duke of Luxembourg on 3 October 2025 after his father, Grand Duke Henri’s abdication.
