Prince Joachim of Denmark, the younger son of Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, married his first wife, Alexandra Manley, on 18 November 1995.
Alexandra and Prince Joachim had met in January 1994, and their engagement was announced in May 1995. He had presented her with a diamond and ruby engagement ring.
Their wedding took place in Frederiksborg Castle Church in Hillerød. Alexandra’s dress was designed by Jørgen Bender and consisted of a high collar, long sleeves, a cinched waist, and a full skirt with a 4-metre-long train. It was covered in nearly 9,000 pearls. She also wore the Alexandrine Drop Tiara, which was a wedding gift from her new mother-in-law, Queen Margrethe II.
The New York Times reported, “The ceremony was performed in the Royal Castle of Frederiksborg, outside Copenhagen. A dinner for 200 guests followed at Fredensborg Castle, the royal summer home. Among the guests were royalty from Sweden, Norway, Belgium and the Netherlands, as well as Prince Edward, the youngest son of Queen Elizabeth II of Britain, and Crown Prince Pavlos of Greece and his new wife, Marie-Chantal Miller.”1
Upon marriage, she became Her Royal Highness Princess Alexandra of Denmark. During their marriage, they had two sons: Nikolai (born 1999) and Felix (born 2002).
Their separation was announced in 2004, and they officially divorced in 2005. Alexandra is currently known as Her Excellency The Countess of Frederiksborg.
