On 23 February 2005, the engagement of Prince Floris of Orange-Nassau and Aimée Söhngen was announced at the Loo Palace in Apeldoorn. His father jokingly said his branch of the family was now “sold out.”

Prince Floris is the fourth and youngest son of Princess Magriet of the Netherlands and Pieter van Vollenhoven. At the time of his wedding, he was tenth in the Dutch line of succession. He met Aimée during his studies at the University of Leiden. They were members of the same student association. Floris studied Dutch law while Aimée studied corporate law.

The couple decided not to seek parliamentary approval for their marriage. This meant that Prince Floris lost his place in the line of succession when he married Aimée. He is still a Prince of Orange-Nassau and a member of the royal family.

Floris and Aimée married in a civil ceremony at the Stadhuis in Naarden on 20 October 2005. A religious ceremony was held on 22 October 2005 at the Grote Kerk in Naarden. Aimée’s wedding dress was of creamy white mikado silk with a train of 3.50 meters. The veil was made of silk tulle and it was four meters long.

Just minutes after the ceremony, Aimée told the press, “It’s wonderful to be married.”

The couple went on to have three children together: Magali  (born 2007), Eliane (born 2009) and Willem Jan (born 2013). The children do not carry any titles and have the last name “van Vollenhoven.”
