Queen Máxima of the Netherlands has joined the Royal Netherlands Army as a reservist.

From February 1st, she has been appointed to the rank of private. She began her official training today and will complete it this year. This training will cover all the practical and theoretical components required to become a reservist.

Queen Máxima wanted to join the reserves because she felt that national security could no longer be taken for granted, and she wanted to contribute to that security. The 54-year-old Queen was just in time, too, as the application age limit is 55. Once she has completed the training, she will receive the rank of lieutenant colonel, and she can be deployed, like other reservists.

There is a close bond between the armed forces and the Dutch Royal House. King Willem-Alexander completed his military service in the navy, and also served in the army and the air force. The Princess of Orange is currently enrolled in the Defensity College and holds the rank of corporal.
