Grand Duke Henri has officially signed his abdication document at the Grand Ducal Palace in Luxembourg.

His eldest child, Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume, will be sworn in as the new Grand Duke of Luxembourg in an hour at the Chamber of Deputies.

The Grand Ducal Family will appear on the balcony of the Grand Ducal Palace following the swearing-in.

Grand Duke Henri is following a century-long tradition of abdicating the throne in favour of the heir instead of ruling for life.

Henri ascended the throne upon the abdication of his father, Grand Duke Jean, on 7 October 2000, after serving as Regent (lieutenant representative) since 1998. Henri named his heir as Regent in October of last year.
