Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel of Sweden visited Gamleby to help celebrate their 750th anniversary.
Gamleby – formerly known as Gamla Västervik – means “the old town” and refers to the fact that the city is located on the site where the town of Västervik originally was.
Many local people turned out to welcome the Crown Princess Couple. The couple walked through Gamleby and were the guests of honour at the anniversary ceremony at Gamla Torget. Music was performed by the Jubilee Choir and the Cultural School.
Crown Princess Victoria gave a speech in which she paid tribute to Gamleby. She said, “Entrepreneurship has always been strong here. Sawmills, stonemasonry, agriculture and boatbuilding have long provided work and hope for the future.”
After the ceremony, the couple had lunch in the Shooting Pavilion. This was hosted by the Chairman of the Municipal Board.

They then headed for a visit to Saab Barracuda, Gamleby’s largest employer, and received a tour of the factory.
