American wins Queen Sonja’s music competition

An American has won Queen Sonja of Norway’s namesake music competition in Oslo.

Queen Sonja awarded American soprano Kathleen O’Mara the first-place prize for the Queen Sonja Singing Competition 2025.

Second place went to another American, mezzo-soprano Meridian Prall and the Polish bass Pawel Horodyski won third place.

Other finalists included Ukrainian baritone Vladyslav Buialskyi, Norwegian soprano Hannah Edmunds and Polish soprano Justyna Khil. Edmunds was awarded Ingrid Bjoner’s Scholarship during the evening.

The Queen attended the competition at the Oslo Concert Hall. Besides the finalists, Queen Sonja also got to enjoy the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of conductor Nicholas Carter, who accompanied the artists during their performances.

This year marked the 30th anniversary of the competition.

The Queen Sonja Singing Competition is held every two years in Oslo for opera and classical music singers from across the world.
