The Danish National Bank has announced that coins featuring the portrait of King Frederik X will go into circulation.
The coins featuring Queen Margrethe II will remain in circulation as well. The tradition of featuring the monarch on coins is over a thousand years old, with the so-called “Sweyn Forkbeard coin” dating from 995.
It is the second time King Frederik has appeared on a coin. A commemorative coin was issued in connection with his 18th birthday in 1986. Commemorative coins were also issued for his wedding to Mary in 2004 and in connection with his succession to the throne in 2024.

Nationalbank Governor Christian Kettel Thomsen said, “The coins are designed with respect for history and with an eye for the present. The new coins have a wide range of details and symbols, some of which draw on the long traditions of Danish coin design, while others are new.”
Niels Kaas, Chief Treasurer of the Nationalbank, said, “With the new coins, we continue a centuries-old tradition of having the portrait of the sitting regent on the obverse of the large coins. We also follow the tradition of having the national coat of arms, the royal coat of arms or parts thereof on the coins.”
Jeanette Skov Jensen, head of design at the Nationalbank, is behind the design of the new coins.
