Queen Camilla has been given a new role, just in time for her 78th birthday.

The Queen has been appointed to a historic new role with the British Navy – one that dates back to King Henry VIII in 1513.

The Royal Navy announced on 16 July that Her Majesty had been appointed as the new Vice Admiral of the United Kingdom.

Queen Camilla is the first woman ever to hold the honorary role with the Navy.

First Sea Lord and Chief of Naval Staff, General Sir Gwyn Jenkins RM, spoke about the Queen’s new role with People Magazine, saying that it would “further enhance Her Majesty’s relationship with the Service.”

The appointment was formally made while Her Majesty visited Devonport, where she attended a ceremony to mark the end of the submarine HMS Astute’s first commission. The Queen became the sponsor 18 years ago for the vessel.
