The new Norwegian line of succession

With the death of King Harald V and the ascension to the throne of King Haakon VIII, the Norwegian line of succession looks different.

Below is how the Norwegian line of succession stands as of today:

  1. Crown Princess Ingrid Alexandra (daughter of the King and Queen)
  2. Prince Sverre Magnus (son of the King and Queen)
  3. Princess Martha Louise (sister of the King)
  4. Maud Angelica Behn (niece of the King)
  5. Leah Isadora Behn (niece of the King)
  6. Emma Tallulah Behn (niece of the King)

Of the six in line to the throne, only Emma is underage (she was born in 2008); however, the chances of her having to step in as monarch are slim.

In Norway, only the monarch’s legitimate descendants, their siblings and their legitimate descendants are eligible to succeed to the throne. The Norwegian line of succession is governed by absolute primogeniture, meaning the eldest child regardless of gender will ascend the throne.
