Princess Aiko of Japan visited the earthquake-damaged area in Tottori Prefecture.

Princess Aiko wore a badge from the National Disaster Prevention Association as she visited the Kurayoshi White-Walled Storehouse District, where buildings from the Edo and Meiji periods still stand. The area was damaged by the Tottori Central Earthquake in 2016. The Princess met with university students who experienced the earthquake ten years ago.

The Princess currently works at the Japanese Red Cross Society and is involved in training young volunteers and told the students, “I was reminded once again of the importance of each individual taking disaster prevention seriously and starting from their immediate surroundings.”

Princess Aiko then joined a Hakota doll painting session. This is a type of papier-mâché doll which symbolises the wish for a child’s safe growth. Princess Aiko told the observers, “My hands are shaking. My eyebrows might be a little too thick.” After applying the eyes and blush, she said, “I will display it as a memento.”

Yoshihiro Makita, the director of the Kurayoshi Hakota Doll Preservation Society, said, “I truly believe that we have created a beautiful and wonderful doll.”

The Princess also attended the “National Disaster Prevention Conference”, which was held in Kurayoshi City on the 17th and 18th.
