Royal Families from around the world have sent in their words of support for Pope Leo XIV following his operation and subsequent cancer diagnosis on Tuesday. Learn who below.
On Tuesday, the world was stunned to learn of the Pope’s cancer diagnosis. Pope Leo XIV underwent an operation to remove a “well-localised” nodule in one of his lungs. After the operation concluded, “successfully, within the expected timeframe and as planned”, the Pope received the news, which the Vatican said had been “suspected from the preoperative examinations.”
Pope Leo was diagnosed with “lung adenocarcinoma” — one of the most common forms of lung cancer, originating in mucus-producing cells and usually developing in the outer part of the lung.
As the news spread over the next day, royal families began sending words of support to the Supreme Pontiff of the global Catholic Church.
- Monaco
Prince Albert II said he was “deeply moved by the news” at learning of the Pope’s diagnosis. “Princess Charlène and I, together with our family and the entire Principality, wish to express our wholehearted support and assure You of our fervent prayers.”
- United Kingdom
The Royal News Organisation has learned that King Charles III is writing privately to Pope Leo XIV. The King and Queen most recently paid a historic state visit to the Vatican in October 2025, where Charles and Leo prayed together. Earlier in 2025, Pope Leo sent a message to King Charles and the British Royal Family following the death of Katharine, the late Duchess of Kent, who was a catholic.
In an unfortunate coincidence, both Sovereigns received a cancer diagnosis approximately 17 months into their respective reigns.
- Qatar
The Amiri Diwan said Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani sent a cable of congratulations to His Holiness Pope Leo XIV after his successful operation, “wishing him continued good health and well-being.”
