Queen Sofía of Spain attended the opening of the International Congress on Neurodegenerative Diseases, which is part of the activities organised for World Alzheimer’s Day.
The 2026 International Congress on Neurodegenerative Diseases was held in Seville and was organised jointly by the Queen Sofía Foundation and the Center for Research on Neurological Diseases Foundation (CIEN), with the collaboration of the Institute of Biomedicine of Seville (IBiS).
Upon arrival, the Queen was greeted by the Mayor of Seville, José Luis Sanz, and the Managing Director of the CIEN Foundation, María Ángeles Pérez Muñoz. Once inside, she was greeted by the Scientific Director of the CIEN Foundation, Pascual Sánchez-Juan, and the President of the Spanish Confederation of Alzheimer’s (CEAFA), María Dolores Almagro.
During the opening, the Queen Sofia Foundation’s awareness campaign, “Extraordinary Brains,” was presented. This campaign will highlight the importance of brain tissue donation for research. Following the opening, the Queen viewed scientific posters in the lobby.

In the afternoon, Queen Sofía attended a flamenco concert, “Recuerdos a compás” (Memories in Rhythm), at the Royal Alcázar of Seville, which was organised for the congress.
