King Haakon of Norway has stepped down as ambassador of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
Toril-Iren Pedersen, Director of the UNDP Global Policy Centre for Governance, confirmed the end of the partnership with Norwegian media Panorama News.
She said, “He fulfilled the role of UNDP ambassador as Crown Prince. Now that he is King of Norway, it is not a given that the position will be transferred.”
She also thanked the King for his work with the UNDP for so many years.
It was announced in November 2025 that the then-Crown Prince Haakon was going to continue his ambassadorship. At the time, his agreement was extended until 2027.
As part of his role, he worked to promote the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, with a special focus on poverty eradication and ocean life.
The King also spent time focusing on the UN Millennium Development Goals, which were completed in 2015, and travelled around the world as a representative. He spent time in countries like Jamaica, Kenya, Guatemala, and Sierra Leon.
His Majesty had been a UNDP Ambassador since 2003.
