There is a close bond between the Armed Forces and the Royal House of the Netherlands. William I, Prince of Orange, was a commander-in-chief of the army, and later stadtholders and kings also led troops. King Willem-Alexander fulfilled his compulsory military service with the Royal Netherlands Navy, and he served in the Royal Netherlands Army and the Royal Netherlands Air Force.
