Emperor Naruhito of Japan has cancelled the Tohoku Regional Tour due to illness.
The Emperor was supposed to visit the Iwate and Miyagi prefectures with his wife, Empress Masako, and their daughter, Princess Aiko. Both the Emperor and Empress have persistent cold symptoms, according to the Imperial Household Agency.
The visit was due to take place on Wednesday and Thursday to inspect the recovery efforts following the March 2011 earthquake and subsequent tsunami.
The trip will be rescheduled, according to the Imperial Household Agency.
It is the first time that the Emperor has cancelled a regional trip due to a health issue since he acceded the throne in May 2019.
