Queen Sofía of Spain has been awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
The Queen was granted the honour in recognition of her involvement in social and humanitarian initiatives and support of food banks.
The President of the Parliament of the Canary Islands, Astrid Pérez, and the Minister of Universities, Science, Innovation, and Culture, Migdalia Machí, among others, attended the ceremony.
The Secretary General of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria read the Rector’s decree conferring the degree of Doctor Honoris Causa on Her Majesty.

The Rector of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Lluís Serra, presented Queen Sofía with the symbols of the degree. They included the laurel wreath, the Book of Science, the ring for signing and sealing opinions and consultations, and the white gloves. She was then given the medal after taking an oath.
After the ceremony, the mother of King Felipe travelled to the Science Forest on the Tafira Campus to plant a commemorative wild olive tree.
