King Frederik and Queen Mary hosted a state banquet at Christiansborg Palace, with the Queen wearing a new tiara and Crown Prince Christian making his debut state visit.

The first day of the Vietnamese state visit to Denmark ended with a dazzling state banquet in Copenhagen. At the invitation of King Frederik X and Queen Mary, the General Secretary and President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, H.E. Tô Lâm, accompanied by Mrs Ngô Phương Ly, is paying a state visit to Denmark from 19–21 October 2026.

On Monday evening, the King and Queen held the grand dinner at Christiansborg Palace in honour of the presidential couple. Last evening was significant, as it was Crown Prince Christian’s debut state banquet.

The Crown Prince and future King wore his full-dress uniform of the Royal Life Guards. Crown Prince Christian recently celebrated his 21st birthday, when he was bestowed the Grand Commander of the Order of the Dannebrog, and official portraits were released to mark the occasion.

Attendees included the Danish government, the Vietnamese delegation, the Praesidium of the Danish Parliament, and representatives of the Danish government and the royal court, among others. After receiving the guest in the Velvet Room, the party then joined the guest as a fanfare sounded.

The night was significant for another reason: Queen Mary debuted Queen Alexandrine’s Tiara, which the royal court notes for the first time in a new design. The Royal Collection acquired the piece from a private owner in 2024 and redesigned it in “close collaboration with the Queen.”

The tiara was originally given as a wedding gift to the future Queen Alexandrine upon her marriage to the future Christian X in 1898. Since then, several generations of the Danish royal family have worn it. Over the years, the tiara has been continuously adapted to reflect changing fashions and usage. Queen Margrethe II previously spoke about redesigning tiaras: “I think “s that is perfectly normal, and I think it’s a very good idea.”

Working closely with the Royal Collection and jewellery designers Diana Holstein and Hanan Emquies, the Queen helped create a new, fully reversible design—one that “respects” the piece’s history and unique tradition while making it suitable for contemporary use. The piece can now be worn as a tiara, a necklace, or a brooch. In this way, it connects to the historical tradition of adapting royal jewelry to the needs and tastes of new generations.
