Princess Madeleine’s message in full reads:
“With deep sadness, and a heart full of gratitude, I remember the incomparable Valentino Garavani. His extraordinary attention to detail, his timeless elegance, and his unmistakable sense of humour made every moment in his presence unforgettable. He was never afraid to speak his true thoughts, always with honesty, warmth, and wit. He created my bridal gown with such care, artistry, and joy — a gift I will cherish forever. My thoughts are also with Giancarlo Giammetti, his lifelong business partner, whose devotion and friendship were so central to Valentino’s life and work. Valentino’s legacy lives on not only in his creations, but in the warmth, generosity, and laughter he shared so freely with us all.”
Valentino designed the 2013 wedding gown she wore to wed Christoper O’Neill in the Royal Chapel of Stockholm Palace. It featured a silk organza skirt with a pleated waist. The short-sleeved dress had a four-metre-long train, and the Princess had lost so much weight before the wedding that small alterations were still being made right before she walked down the aisle.
Italian-born Valentino Garavani died at the age of 93 on 19 January. He founded the famous luxury brand Valentino in 1960, and throughout his life, he was a go-to designer for the royals of the world.
