King Juan Carlos of Spain has taken a dig at his daughter-in-law, Queen Letizia, in his upcoming memoir.
The former reigning King of Spain, who lives in the UAE, has written his memoir, Reconciliation, a little over ten years after abdicating the Spanish throne.
In the book, King Juan Carlos spoke about his daughter-in-law briefly, whom he admitted he has kept a distant relationship with over the past several years.
Spanish newspaper El Confidencial published an excerpt ahead of the book’s publication where Juan Carlos says the pair have a strained relationship.
“She did not help to strengthen our family ties,” he confessed.
Tension in the Spanish Royal Family between Queen Letizia and her in-laws has been talked about for years, particularly following a verbal altercation at Easter a few years ago.
A video went viral after Easter Mass in 2018 that showed Queen Letizia blocking photographers who were attempting to take photos of Queen Sofia and her granddaughters, Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofia. Letizia was also seen removing her in-law’s hand from the younger Sofia. A tense exchange then took place before King Felipe appeared to intervene.
Reconciliation will be published on 5 November in France.
