The Bains de Mer Tiara was a gift from the Société des Bains de Mer to Princess Grace of Monaco.
It is designed by Cartier with three stylised diamond elements, set with round and baguette-cut stones, perch across the top of the tiara and a diamond band running behind them. At the centre of each component is a large cabochon ruby. The red and white represent Monaco’s national colours.
It can be worn as a traditional tiara, but it can also be removed from its frame to wear as a necklace. All three elements can also be detached, allowing you to use them as a hairpiece or a brooch.
Princess Grace wore the tiara in public for the first time on 18 April 1956 during a gala held at the Opera House in Monte-Carlo. She wore it again a year later, when she had a private audience with Pope Pius XII at the Vatican.
The tiara still belongs to the princely family, and her daughter, Princess Caroline, has worn parts of it.1
