Princess Sayako’s Tiara was worn by Sayako, Princess Nori, the youngest child and only daughter of Emperor Emeritus Akihito and Empress Emerita Michiko.
It was made around 1990 by Mikimoto, and Sayako wore it for official functions. She first wore it for her coming-of-age ceremony in 1990. When she married a commoner in 2005, she gave up her imperial titles, and her tiara returned to the vault.
In 2021, the tiara was refurbished for Aiko, Princess Toshi, the only child of Emperor Naruhito and Empress Michiko. She turned 20 on 1 December 2021. Normally, she would have received a brand new tiara, but due to the COVID pandemic, no money was set aside for a new tiara as a cost-saving measure. This tiara was loaned to Aiko, rather than given, so a name change isn’t in order just yet.
