With Grand Duke Guillaume beginning his reign today, let’s take a look at the new line of succession to the Luxembourgish throne.

The line of succession in Luxembourg abides by absolute primogeniture and is limited to Grand Duke Henri’s descendants, his brother and his descendants and the descendants of his uncle.

The most recent change to the laws governing the line of succession took effect in 2011 when absolute primogeniture was adopted.

The current line of succession to inherit the Luxembourgish throne is as follows:

  1. Hereditary Grand Duke Charles of Luxembourg
  2. Prince Francois of Luxembourg
  3. Prince Felix of Luxembourg
  4. Princess Amalia of Nassau
  5. Prince Liam of Nassau
  6. Prince Balthasar of Nassau
  7. Princess Alexandra of Luxembourg
  8. Victoire Bagory
  9. Prince Sebastien of Luxembourg
  10. Prince Guillaume of Luxembourg
  11. Prince Paul Louis of Nassau
  12. Prince Leopold of Nassau
  13. Prince Jean Andre of Nassau
  14. Prince Robert of Luxembourg
  15. Prince Alexandre of Nassau

In 2011, Grand Duke Henri issued a decree allowing female legitimate descendants from his line to inherit the throne and granting them equal succession rights. Before that, Henri’s only daughter, Princess Alexandra, was not in the line of succession, but now she and her children are eligible to ascend the throne.

The Grand Duke’s brother, Prince Louis, and his children are not in the line of succession. Louis gave up his and his children’s succession rights upon his marriage to Tessy Antony in 2006.
