The Princess of Asturias, Leonor, is marking her 20th birthday today, and a Spanish journalist has expressed her confidence in the heir to the throne.
The heir to the throne is thought to be marking the day privately as she continues her military education with the Spanish Air Force.
The Royal News Organisation spoke to Spanish Royal Correspondent, Andrea Mori, about the Princess’s popularity and the lack of public celebration for her birthday.
“We are quite surprised because there are no official events for her birthday [but] she is still focused on her military training,” Mori said.
Mori revealed that the future Queen of Spain is very popular in the kingdom, and the popularity of the monarchy went up after their response to the deadly floods in Valencia last year.
“She [Leonor] is very popular right now. Last week, all the family was in Asturias, and many people wanted to see her.
“She is doing very well, also the King and the Queen, especially after the DANA last year.”
Mori added, “We had more than 200 killed by the rains and floods. They wanted to be with the people, no matter the circumstances. They are more respected now because of this.”
As Princess Leonor continues her military education and training for her future role, the royal correspondent has confidence in her ability to one day reign. More stated, “She is fully prepared and knows how to connect with her generation. This is very appreciated and it is very important.”
Princess Leonor, who carries the title of Princess of Asturias as heir to the throne, was born on 31 October 2005 in Madrid. If she ascends to the throne as expected, she will be Spain’s first queen regnant since the early to mid-1800s.
